What Is Structured Data?

Structured data is a standardized format (using Schema.org vocabulary) that provides search engines with explicit information about a page's content. Instead of guessing what your page is about, structured data tells Google exactly — "this is a product," "this is a recipe," or "this is an FAQ."

  • JSON-LD: The format recommended by Google. It lives in a <script> tag in the page head, completely separate from the visible HTML.
  • Microdata: An older format where Schema properties are embedded directly into HTML elements as attributes.
  • RDFa: A W3C standard that embeds metadata in HTML using custom attributes. Less commonly used for SEO.

Why Structured Data Matters

Structured data is the gateway to rich results in Google — star ratings, FAQ dropdowns, product prices, recipe cards, and more. These enhanced listings dramatically increase visibility.

Pages with structured data can see up to 30% higher click-through rates thanks to rich snippets appearing directly in search results.

Common Schema Types

These are the most widely used structured data types that unlock rich results:

  • Article / BlogPosting: Helps Google display your content in Top Stories and news carousels.
  • Product: Shows price, availability, and review ratings directly in search results.
  • FAQPage: Displays expandable FAQ answers directly in the SERP, taking up more visual space.
  • LocalBusiness: Powers Google's Knowledge Panel and Maps integration for local businesses.
  • BreadcrumbList: Creates a breadcrumb trail in search results for better navigation context.

How to Use This Tool

Enter any live URL and click "Scan Schema". We'll fetch the page's HTML, extract all JSON-LD structured data blocks, parse and validate them, and display each schema type with its full code. This lets you verify that your Schema.org markup is correctly implemented before testing it in Google's Rich Results Test.

Frequently Asked Questions

Structured data is a standardized format for providing information about a page and classifying the page content. It uses vocabulary from Schema.org.
The *Schema Generator* helps you create new code from scratch. This *Analyzer* reads an existing live URL to check if valid schema markup is already present.
JSON-LD is the format recommended by Google. It is easier to add/update than Microdata because it lives in a script tag rather than being interleaved with HTML elements.
While structured data is not a direct ranking factor, it enables rich snippets (stars, prices, FAQs) in search results, which significantly improve click-through rates and visibility.
